Kinky Boots

Show Tickets

Kinky Boots continues its run at Al Hirschfeld Theatre on the Great White Way. The Broadway success tells the story of Charlie Price, a man struggling to save his family’s shoe business after his father’s death. Along the way, he meets Lola, a drag queen with an attitude, but without sturdy shoes to perform with on stage. Together the pair design a woman’s boot that is comfortable for a man to wear. Charlie has to convince his workers of the potential triumph that could accompany the shoe, and Lola is there along the way to help Charlie – both personally and professionally. Although Charlie and Lola may seem different on paper, their business relationship soon turns into a friendship. Both realize they may not be as dissimilar as they originally believed.

Kinky Boots is based on a 2005 film of the same name. The musical features music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein. Since its opening, Kinky Boots has become a smash hit. The production received 13 Tony nominations and won six of the awards, including Best Musical and Best Score. The cast recording for Kinky Boots also won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.

Reviews

Critics and audience members from around the world are praising Hirschfeld Theatre’s production of Kinky Boots. The reviews are highly positive:

“Try to resist if you must… you might as well just give it up to the audience-hugging charisma of her songs.

Under Mr. Mitchell’s precise and affectionate direction, they do what you want performers in musicals to do: they define specific characters by the way they sing and move. From their entrances, the cast members build up a bank of good vibrations….Kinky Boots is about finding your passion, overcoming prejudice and transcending stereotypes.” – The New York Times

“…Kicky crowd-pleaser…Lauper is a musical-theater natural, combining bright, infectious melodies with simple but effective lyrics. As each act progresses, the energy rises palpably, boosted by a heart-strong cast…The overall effect is nigh irresistible; if you’ve been low about…musicals, Kinky Boots may be just the thing to get you back on your feet.” – TimeOut New York

“Sometimes audiences just wanna have fun. And you’d be a heel not to have fun at Kinky Boots…[a] cause for celebration is the infectious Top 40-ish score by ’80s pop star Cyndi Lauper…Kinky Boots delivers some pumps-up kicks.” – Entertainment Weekly

“They’re dazzling, dangerous and devil-red. They’re the infamous footwear giving Broadway’s ever-joyful but sometimes too pointed new musical Kinky Boots its name…Thanks to director-choreographer Jerry Mitchell, the high-heeled traffic-stoppers make their first appearance in head-turning fashion. It’s like a Hello, Dolly star entrance, but instead of a staircase, it’s a factory conveyor belt. Hello, Kinky.

Lauper’s first Broadway score is …multicolored, surprising and fun…[The songs] pack heart and hooks, add shading to characters and nudge the story forward…Fierstein…expertly connects the dots…[and] wedges in trademark quips…Mitchell’s production moves lickety-split…The staging is also a looker thanks to David Rockwell’s sets…Gregg Barnes’ vibrant costumes, and Kenneth Posner’s luxe lighting.” – New York Daily News

“What we have, in Kinky Boots, is a well-fitted, well-staged toe-tapper in the contemporary big-Broadway idiom. It’s never boring; it’s never shocking; you are likely to leave entirely entertained and satisfied…The energy level stays up… in no small part owing to Cyndi Lauper. Turns out that she has a great knack for writing theater songs…Girls and boys everywhere, and especially boys who enjoy dressing as girls, do wanna have fun.” – New York Magazine
